What do we do with that free time? Mostly we panic and we spend it watching TV.

Clay Shirky Web 2.0 Expo on the Participatory Web

Absolutely my favourite presentation about web and collaboration. This thought reminded me about famous “Stop watching fucking Lost!” from Gary’s Vaynerchuk speech Do what you love (no excuses!).

Seth Godin: Quieting the Lizard Brain

“What you do for a living is not be creative, what you do is ship,” says bestselling author Seth Godin, arguing that we must quiet our fearful “lizard brains” to avoid sabotaging projects just before we finally finish them.

There are so many things we want to do with Harmony. We really feel like what we have accomplished thus far is just the tip of the iceberg. I know that sounds cliche, but it is true. If you are passionate about something, your head will always swim with ideas and this swimming tends to lead to feeling overwhelmed.

When this happens, make a list. Honestly, you do not even have to keep the list, you can just throw it away. For some reason, unbeknownst to me, lists help calm the brain. I think it is that keeping ideas in your head feels like herding cats. Putting them down on paper (yes, real paper) helps structure things and seeing everything structured helps you realize it is not so bad.

Rule No. 1: Never Lose Money. Rule No. 2: Never Forget Rule No. 1.

Some people running businesses or working - in particular working on behalf of someone are prone to such behavior:

‘Oh my God I have so much work, I’m such a workaholic. ” Running circles in diapers - everything they do is the most IMPORTANT thing. And then after a year, it turns out that this really “hard” work resulted in losses for the company and none potential profits or gains. Stop pretending you’re important, start working, make profits.

This great post made my day. Spot on.

    Period.

When you have a 9-to-5 mentality, you’ll spread your work out until 5pm, every time. Work expands to fit the time you have to do it. If you tell yourself you only have until noon to do the few hours of real work in your day, you’ll probably be able to make it happen. As a corollary to this, don’t think of your pay in terms of hours. Instead, think in terms of days. If you do a day’s work before noon, pay yourself for a day’s work. It’s only fair!

    I don’t think of my life as a career. I do stuff. I respond to stuff. That’s not a career — it’s a life!

“It’s one of the biggest mistakes of entrepreneurs, who have created a startup. They think, that if they are really involved in their project, then everyone else should be involved as much, as they are. Listen to me carefully: they won’t be involved as much, if you won’t give them something back!”

Seems like a good start ;)
